Born in 1970 off exit 149 on the Garden State Parkway, Kelly Light started to draw as soon as she could hold a crayon.
By the time she was five years old, she knew the difference between a Silly Symphony and a Merry Melody, a Looney Toon from a Terry Toon. Saturday mornings brought her favorite animated characters into her living room and into her imagination.
Sunday mornings then brought the funny pages. From Blondie to B.C., from Prince Valiant to Peanuts, what artists could do with just a few flourishes of pencil and pen left indelible marks upon the young artist. With single mindedness she spent her childhood and education on the goal to become a cartoonist.
Back on the East Coast while working in an NYC independent animator’s loft, the world of cartoon merchandising knocked on her door. For the next nine years she worked as a licensed character artist on projects and products for companies such as The Walt Disney Company, Hanna Barbera, Nickelodeon, Peanuts, The Jim Henson Co., The Coca Cola Co. and many more.
Now working from home as a freelancer, characters come to life from the tip of her pencil to become logos, murals for children's libraries, greeting cards, comic strips for publications, fashion illustration, wall art for kids, and hopefully soon children's books. With an open mind, a happy heart and a busy pencil, the possibilities are limited only by her imagination.
